Children's Museum Pictures

We had so much fun at the museum on Thursday! Here are some pictures for you!

IB Unit of Study and Science

Please remember to send in photos of your home country in the 4 seasons.

Students will be learning about what kind of tools meteorologists use. We will learn a fun poem to help us remember what each tool’s purpose is. Here is a great website for kids about weather if you would like to read over some information at home with your child: http://www.weatherwizkids.com/career-becoming-meteorologist.htm

Students will learn about the 4 seasons and will sing a seasons song during Calendar time.

We will also begin studying The Water Cycle. Students will learn where rain comes from, where water comes from, and what a cycle is. Students will learn the terms: precipitation, condensation, and evaporation.

Language Arts/Writing

Please continue to review your child’s sight words with them and have them read books in their home reader bag every night. If they know the words, encourage them to begin reading it like the talk and using the punctuation marks to change their intonation (or the way they read the words). We want them to be able to read fluently and accurately.

-ake word family. Students will learn about the “bossy e” which makes the vowel say its name. Students will find all the –ake family words in our poem, make a list of –ake family words, and brainstorm about other “bossy e” words we can think of.

We will be reviewing all of our poems from Fall semester and I will send them home. Please make sure your child brings their yellow poetry folder on Tuesday. Please review the poems with your child whenever a time arises! You will be amazed how they can read and point under each words as they sing!

Students will continue to learn how to write about small moments by using lots of details! We will also begin learning about 'procedural writing', also known as 'how-to' writing.

Math

What is a 2-digit number? Does it matter what order you write a 2-digit number? Students will practice reading and representing 2-digit numbers. Then they will play 2-digit bingo.
-
What is an attribute? Students will play a game using multiple attributes to describe objects.
- Is it faster to count by 1’s or 5’s? Do you notice a pattern? What are objects we can count by 5’s? Students will sing a count by 5’s song and think of things we can count by 5’s. For example: fingers, toes, tall marks..

We are beginning coins this week. Students are learning coin poems to remember what each coin looks like and how much it is worth.

The 100th day of school is February 4th, please have your child continue working on their 100th day project.

Social Studies

- Without using money, how can we get what we need by trading? Students will learn about how basic human needs can be met such as self-producing and trading. Students will learn about what trade means and come up with a list of things we trade in the world. Example: library book, 5 pennies for a nickel, books with friends
- What is a good? What is a service? Students will learn about what a good is – objects that are grown, sold, or made to satisfy people’s needs. Students will learn what a service is – jobs that people do to help others satisfy their needs.

Field Trip and More!

Hi Parents,

Here is a peek at what we will be focusing on this week:

Field Trip!

We will be going to the Children’s Museum on Thursday! Please have your child wear their printed tie dye shirts or their red Robert’s Elementary shirt that day. The tie dye shirts will be arriving this week before the field trip. If you do not have a red Roberts shirt, you can purchase them in the cafeteria on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Also, please send a sack lunch for your child. We will be eating in our classroom when we return from the field trip.

IB Unit of Study

Please remember to return the IB homework, which was to find pictures of each season from your home country. You may send personal pictures from your home, or pictures from the internet or magazine.

Language Arts/Writing

Please continue to review your child’s sight words with them and have them read books in their home book bag every night. If they know the words, encourage them to begin reading it like the talk and using the punctuation marks to change their intonation (or the way they read the words). We want them to be able to read fluently and accurately.

- The students will begin to learn how to write about small moments in their lives. We want the students to be able to “zoom in” on one thing that happened to them and write in detail about it, eventually over many pages in a book.

Math

- What does (-) mean? What happens to a number when we take-away (subtract) from it? The students will be introduced to subtraction terminology and symbols using number stories and counters.
- Without words, how can we show someone how many of an object there is? Why is it important to know how to write numbers correctly? The students will practice with number writing and other numeration skills.
- What is an attribute? The students will be introduced to attribute blocks and to a game that helps children think about sorting rules.
- How can we tell if we are telling a joining or take-away number story? How do we know if we should use a (+) or a (-) symbol? The students will develop understanding of mathematical symbols and language in the context of addition and subtraction number stories.
Looking forward, have your student begin thinking about their 100th day collection project. It is located on the back of their January homework.

Science

- Students will sort pictures of different weather patterns. We will discuss the types of weather, what kind of clothes you wear in this weather, if the weather is dangerous.
- Students will sing a seasons song during calendar time.
- Students will learn about what a meteorologist does and have a chance to be a meteorologist to predict the weather for that day.
- Students will learn about the different tools meteorologists use to measure weather: a wind vane, thermometer, and rain gauge.

Social Studies

Students will begin learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and why we celebrate his life. We will do an experiment with a brown egg and a white egg to discover if they are the same or different on the inside, even though they are different colors on the outside. We will learn about MLK’s dream for equality for everyone. Then we will think about and write about our dreams.

Remember there is no school on Monday January 20th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Fun with Body Shapes

Our class had a great time today reviewing over shapes! We looked deeper into each shape, and noticed that each shape had special attributes about them.

Creating the square and rectangle with our students was the most interesting part! It had the same amount of sides and vertices (corners) but the lengths were definitely different!

Students problem solved and figured out how to fix our rectangle's length problem by adding 2 students to the top and bottom of our rectangle.

There was a student who figured out that if you place 2 taller students at the top and bottom of the shape, and 2 shorter students on the sides, it would also create a rectangle.

Happy New Year!!

I hope you have all had a restful break!

We have a busy semester ahead of us, and I wanted to give you a sneak peek at what we will be learning about this week.

IB

We are beginning our third unit of the year. It is called “How the World Works” and the central idea is climate affects our lives.

During the next 6 weeks, your child will inquire into the relationship between climate and weather, how weather affects our lives, and different kinds of weather. The students will also learn about the tools used by meteorologists and how weather looks different in different parts of the world. We will look closer at how our clothing and activities change from season to season. Finally, we will wrap up the unit by drawing themselves in winter and another season of choice.

Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to look at weather forecasts to know what future weather will be and to self-select appropriate clothing choices. Students will talk with peers about their personal experiences during different seasons. Throughout this unit, we want students to strive to be communicators, curious, and independent.

For a research component of this unit, please send in pictures of the seasons in your home country. You may send personal pictures from your home, or pictures from the internet or magazine.

Language Arts/Writing

- ill spelling pattern. The students will learn about the –ill spelling pattern by singing a song called “Down the Hill”. They will highlight the –ill words, discuss the meanings of the words, sort –ill family words, and make a list of –ill family words.

Math

- “What is a calculator?” “What is it used for?”: Students will meet the calculator. They will begin practicing reading and entering numbers on a calculator.

- “How is rolling two dice at the same dime different than rolling one?” Students will gain experience with addition, graphing, and probability.

- “How can we make shapes with our bodies?” Students will deepen their understanding of shapes through cooperative movement activity.

- “Does a shape stay the same if I turn it?” Students will solidify their understanding of shapes.

Science

- Students will begin to think about the weather and seasons. We will discuss the central idea and come up with questions about weather and seasons for our IB “wonder wall”.

- Students will begin to understand “What is weather?” and will make a chart of weather words.

- Students will sort pictures of different weather patterns. We will discuss the types of weather, what kind of clothes you wear in this weather, if the weather is dangerous.

- Students will sing a seasons song during calendar time.

- We will be reading “The Mitten” this week. We will discuss the characters, setting, problem, solution, and sequence the story.

- Students will identify “tricky vowels” found in the mitten.

Social Studies
